Selecting the right equipment and consumables for the laboratory can be a daunting task, given the number of suppliers and similar products on the market. Dr. Mouhssin Oufir at Pharmazentrum, Basel University in Switzerland has taken his own approach and tests the product candidates side by side in his lab before settling on a decision.
In a collaboration with research groups at the Agricultural Research Council in South Africa (Stellenbosch) and University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (Muttenz), the team led by Prof. Matthias Hamburger is investigating the potential of key compounds in Honeybush (Cyclopia spp.), a South African herbal tea. One of the compounds of interest is a flavone called luteolin, which the research group needs to extract from transport buffer used in Caco-2 permeability assays to investigate its intestinal drug absorption. After a series of experiments, ISOLUTE® SLE+ turned out to be the best product on the market for this extraction.
In this video, he explains their strategies for testing and selecting products, and why he appreciates Biotage as a provider of lab equipment and consumables.
